Crossword Maker
The Crossword Maker builds a real crossword from your own word and clue pairs. Type up to eight pairs, one per line, press Make Crossword, and the generator places the words across and down so they cross wherever their letters match. Students call out letters, you type them into the squares, and the Check button marks any wrong letters red. No signup needed.

How to make a crossword
- Check the word and clue list under the grid. Edit it if you like: one word per line, written as WORD: clue, with 2 to 10 letters per word.
- Press Make Crossword. Words are placed across and down so they cross where letters match.
- Click a square and type a letter. Focus moves along the word for you, and clicking a clue jumps to its first square.
- Press Check Answers to mark wrong letters red and see how many letters are right. Clear Letters wipes the grid for another try.

Frequently asked questions
How do the words get placed?
The generator sorts your words longest first, then places each new word so it crosses a word already on the grid at a matching letter. Words that cannot cross yet are placed next to the puzzle, so every word you add appears.
How many words can I add?
Up to eight words per puzzle, each 2 to 10 letters long. Shorter lists with shared letters, like CAT, TREE and APPLE, cross the most neatly.
Can students solve it together?
Yes. The grid is designed for the projector: click a square, type the letter the class calls out, and use Check Answers together at the end.
Is the crossword maker free?
Yes, it is completely free to use, with no signup and no limits.
Do I need to sign up?
No signup or account is needed. Just open the page and start using it.
